PPL Generation's Brunner Island Facility

PPL Generation

York Haven, Pennsylvania

Advantage Engineers provided geotechnical engineering services associated with a 130 coal car rail extension project at PPL Generation’s Brunner Island facility in York County, Pennsylvania. The rail line is being constructed on a former fly ash landfill immediately adjacent to the Susquehanna River and will be required to allow the coal-fired generation facility to meet increasing demand.

Our services included a detailed subsurface investigation and laboratory testing program to assess the settlement characteristics of the very soft, unstable fly ash in response to the load of the new rail line, and provision of alternatives to adequately support the coal car extension. The results of the engineering analyses indicated that the entire alignment of the proposed rail line would require surcharging to mimic the loads of the coal cars and reduce post-construction settlements to tolerable limits prescribed by AREMA and Norfolk Southern.

Advantage also provided the following services:

  • Full-time construction-phase consulting
  • Quality assurance monitoring and materials testing during implantation of the pre-load program
  • Preparation of the rail subgrade, sub-drainage, and ballast for the ties and rail
